Mongolian Bankhar Dog Information

Out of need, the historic Bankhar Mongolian herding dog is making a comeback.

For nearly a century, Mongolian herders utilized these muscular canines to guard their sheep herds from predators.

After the Xinhai Revolution, when Soviet soldiers entered Mongolian land, things took a decisive turn.

Other control tactics, such as weapons and poison, were utilized to limit the predator population as Mongolia became more industrialized.

Not only did alternative approaches reduce the Bankhar population,

but the destiny of other animal species that include snow leopards, eagles, brown bears, & foxes hung in the balance as well.

Scientists are now attempting to boost the population and return them to their ancient purpose: flock protection.
